long distance rockets. israel wants to eliminate the rocket threat against its cities from gaza. you mentioned in your introduction i think it is 850 rockets fired this year at israel. they fired 100 the last five days. that's what provoked the response. now the problem is that israel, it was sensed that israel's hands were tied because of their relationship with egypt. egypt was in fear that egypt would end the peace treaty. that is one reason why israel feels it's calibrating carefully the attack on gaza.poised on th of gaz yachlt they're trying this pinpointed air attacks and also attacks from the sea. they resumed the policy of targeted assassinations against hamas leaders. they want very much to end the threat from gaza. but they also do not want a ground invasion partly because of the cost and also because they don't want to alienate egypt. so this is a very dachg us ange moment for this region. >> we know that they have great familiarity with attacks on two fronts. lebanon in the past and attacks from the south. again now with the new conflict that appears to be growing b

threatening e-mails sent to jill kelley were coming from, which cities, which hotels. eventually discovered the name paula broadwell. agents also noted that pattern matched her book promotion travel. armed with legal authority, the fbi got access to her e-mail account and found she sent them, but also found were suggestive e-mails from general david petraeus. first someone wondered if someone had hacked into their account. later both admitted to their affairs. low-level classified documents were found on her computer, but agents determined she had proper access to them. after reviewing all the evidence, prosecutors determined no crimes were committed, no leaking of classified information, no threat to national security. some members of congress say they or at least president obama should have been told about the investigation while it was going on. >> once the fbi realized it was investigating a director of the cia or the cia director had come within its focus or scope, i believe at that time they had an absolute obligation to tell the president. not to protect david petraeus, but to protec

that has so crippled much of our politics, both in the cities and in towns that we live in as well as, obviously, in the congress has not really overtaken the entire process. barack obama was re-elected, and we have been told repeatedly in print and on these programs that this particular president is very difficult to access emotionally, that he is reserved, that he is withdrawn. and you saw there in that clip the president of the united states tearing up before a group of people who have spent an enormous amount of time helping him get re-elected. and it just points to the fact that the president, at the ends of the day, while the president of the united states is a human being. and he realizes quite well, more than any of us would ever realize, that the end of his trip, his electoral trip, summons the beginnings. and i think that's what brings the tears. his journey, historic as it is, legendary as it is, the first black president of the united states of america, traveled the country from coast to coast, state after state, small town, big city, tremendous crowds initially in 2008. a

cities as far north as tel aviv. there is one report from gaza that the palestinians had fired a rocket at tel aviv but there is no confirmation of that. there was no news of it landing. one missile did get to the anti-rocket defense system and killed three israelis who apparently did not obey instructions to seek shelter but were looking at the action from their balcony. the army is telling everybody in israel, do what you're told and then you'll stay safe. inside gaza, at least 13 palestinians have been killed, 100 wounded. israel is continuing the attacks not only from the air by the way but also from ships at sea. israeli troops are also poised on the edge of gaza and reserves are being called up, too, in case the operation becomes bigger and israel launches a ground invasion of gaza which israel says they do not. hamas does not want. but it is certainly a situation. >> martin fletcher there live in tel aviv. thanks so much. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins is tracking your weather. he has your forecast. good morning you to, bill. >> i'm all full of good news today. >> hey,

. explosions rocked gaza city as israeli warplanes pounded hamas targets. hamas vowing retaliation for the death of its military chief two days ago is escalating missile attacks deeper into israel. the jerusalem post reports that israeli air force has fired a rock near the home of hamas's prime minister. no one was reportedly injured. for the first time since the gulf war, more than 20 years ago, air raid sirens were triggered in the commercial capital of tel aviv, sending residents running for cover. so far the long-range missiles fired from gaza have landed without damage there. yesterday israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu warned that the military operation could significantly widen. >> no government would tolerate a situation where nearly one-fifth of its people live under a constant barrage of rockets and missile fire. and israel will not tolerate this situation. i hope that hamas and the other terror organizations in gaza got the message. if not, israel is prepared to take whatever action is necessary to defend our people. >> while egypt's prime minister visited gaza today

that central park in new york city officially 4.7 inches of snow. why is that significant? it's the earliest ever in 130 years of recordkeeping that new york city's had four inches of snow. this on the heels of remember last year at the end of october, they had two inches of snow, the earliest ever in history. new york city has been one of these places we've been flagging records left and right. as far as snow totals, connecticut got nailed, six-plus inches of snow up there. the jersey shore didn't do too bad snowwise, only a couple slushy inches, but power outages in central jersey were numerous as mika mentioned. let's show you where is the storm right now? it's just south of cape cod. if you have family or friends in eastern mass down there in the cape, the winds are howling this morning, up to 60 miles per hour. the power's been flickering on and off there. thankfully the snow portion is over with. temperatures are warming up. but look at these wind gusts. martha's vineyard, up to 50. provincetown, almost 60-mile-per-hour gusts. we shouldn't any additional power outages in jerse

upmostly in big cities with diverse population. they say that as if that's self-explanatory in terms of why you have long lines. but florida officials have you been to l.a.? really big city. we have been getting letters from people who vote in california where they opened tons and tons of polling places that serve much smaller groups of voters than the way you dole with it in florida. in california they vote at the nep tune society. they vote in their neighbor's garage. they voted at headquarters of the venice beach lifeguards. californians do not do is stand in line and wait eight hours to vote. after the cake splat of an election in florida and several other states, we're watching for ideas about how to fix our broken election system. rick hassen says we should declare florida an election disaster area and bring in the fed's. congress should nationalize it and the option of using your thumbprint as i.d. at the polls. the center for justice is recomme recommending that congress require early voting in every state. the same amount and set a standard for number of voting machines so ever

. central park in new york city had almost five inches which is unheard of this early in the season. the storm almost looks like a tropical storm. it's wrapping warmer air into new england. the roads will melt in a hurry in especially the high traffic areas. the snow has just about ended in the white. a little left here. the big heavy snows are done with in just about all areas. so we're going to deal with rain, drizzle and strong gusty winds. if there's going to be any wind damage this morning, it's going to be out here on cape cod. providence, good wind. we have been gusting in the 50s for the last couple hours over the island and all through cape cod. that's the only issue with the storm left. as i mentioned, the temperatures are starting to go above freezing especially the big cities. the highways will see improvement as we go throughout the morning. the forecast goes into the 40s. later today they're showing zero problems on the roads in all these locations. we should be in the 50s on friday, so it will be gone. there's another big storm behind this one. blizzard warnings in mo

flew over parts of the city and the region impacted, there's still a lot of cleanup to do. people still need emergency help. they still need heat. they still need power and food. they still need shelter. kids are still trying to figure out where they're going to go to school. so there's a lot of short-term, immediate stuff that has to be dealt with, and we're going to make sure that we stay here as long as people need that immediate help. that's fema's primary task, and we'll be coordinating closely with state and local governments to make sure folks get the short-term help. what we heard is there's long-term rebuilding required. you look at this block, and you know that this is a community that is deeply rooted. most of the folks that i met here have been here 20, 30, 50 years. they don't want to see their community uprooted, but there's got to be a plan for rebuilding. that plan is going to have to be coordinated and there's resources. i've worked with the outstanding congressional delegation led by your senators, chuck schumer and kristen gillibrand, and working with governor c
